The arms of Paulet, Marquis of Winchester, an important Dorset landowner
in Elizabethan times, can be seen in the overmantel in the hall. A descendant
of his, Lady Mary Paulet, married John Montagu, 5th Earl of Sandwich,
whose family thus inherited the surrounding land in the 1760s.
The Comptons moved this and another Jacobean overmantel to Mapperton from Melplash Court, which had been in the same ownership since 1693. Mrs. Labouchere rescued the house from decay after the First World War and introduced the Renaissance style ceilings in the hall and dining room.
