The 4th Earl of Sandwich, credited with putting roast beef between
two slices of bread, was an able diplomat and a much-lampooned politician.
He was First Lord of the Admiralty in the 1770s and a sponsor of Captain
Cook's voyages. His mistress was the opera singer Martha Ray, who was
shot by a jealous young lover outside Covent Garden.
Among the rare pieces of furniture in the house are Louis XV commodes and an Egyptian style suite by Gillow of Lancaster which commemorates the Battle of the Nile.
