Traditionally burials have taken place at Netherbury, the mother church, because Mapperton is built on solid rock. After the plague, the bodies were carried a mile down the lane but were stopped halfway near the Posy Tree and had to be buried in a field.
Under the chancel, steps lead down to a family vault which has the following inscription:
"The Sepulchre of Mary the wife of Richard Brodrepp Esq hewn out of
this rock of her inheritance for them and their posterity Anno 1650."
